Hammond Wants Off The Shelf Brexit Transition

The FT reports that chancellor Philip Hammond has told business leaders he wants to negotiate a simple “off-the-shelf” (rather than bespoke) transition deal with Brussels to maintain current trading relations with Europe for at least two years after Brexit.

Hammond said he wants a “standstill” transition leaving companies with full access to the single market and customs union, followed by a further “implementation phase” while a new, UK-specific trade accord is put in place.

The tripping point for his cabinet colleagues is the fact that this would see Britain stripped of voting rights and influence in Brussels but obliged to accept European Court rulings, free movement rules and budget contributions.

Interestingly, whilst other cabinet ministers have let their views be known, Theresa May’s own views are a mystery to colleagues.

The question is, does Theresa May actually have any views or is she waiting to be told what they are?

Rudd Closes The Stable Door A Year Late

The Government has launched a major assessment of the “costs and benefits” of EU migration in Britain, over a year after the Brexit vote.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd will commission official experts on a Migration Advisory Committee to carry out a detailed analysis of the role of EU nationals in the UK economy and society.

Call me "picky", but shouldn't this have been done a year ago?

It would appear that Liam Fox is prepared to accept the import of chlorine washed chicken, as the price of a post Brexit US/UK trade deal.

Transitional Period Agreed

Cabinet Brexiteers have finally agreed that the UK needs a “transitional” period after Brexit to keep skilled EU migrants coming into Britain.

The consensus is now that EU migration could continue for at least two and possibly four years after Brexit formally takes place in April 2019.

Quite logical, and quite amazing that the cabinet hadn't worked that out a long time ago!
